Students develop device to help disabled girl

Shared by Ana Duarte on 2019-04-17 18:53

About the solution

Stella can do a lot of things on her own, but it’s hard for her to go to the bathroom alone because it’s very hard for her to pull her pants up.

Jodi Carroll, the girl’s occupational therapist, tried to find a solution and even called some clothing companies but got no response. And that’s when she contacted students from the local high school. When they were presented with the challenge, they immediately took action.

“As educators, we must faithfully rely on each other and believe that a world without barriers for our students begins with the work we do every day. The students did not waver in taking on the challenge of inventing something sleek, unobtrusive, and practical. I believe this speaks volumes about their tenacity, work ethic, and spirit to help others”, Kim said.

Within a week, the students came up with a 3D printing device prototype. It consists of a small plastic bar that snaps onto Stella’s pants, allowing her to manage her clothing without them rolling or folding out of her reach. The project will be ongoing; students continue to work on modifications of the device and will do so as Stella grows.

"I knew they would come up with something. I'm really grateful these young people came together to help my daughter, it's wonderful," the girl’s mother stated.

About the author

A group of American high school students invented, in 2018, a 3D writing device so that Stella Maplass, who was 6 years old at the time, would be able to pull her pants up when she needs to use the bathroom. The girl suffers from Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita (or AMC), a rare condition that limits her ability to fully extend her arms and legs.
