Platform provides custom face masks to healthcare workers

About the solution

During the Covid-19 pandemic, healthcare services all over the world were experiencing shortages of Personal Protective Equipment. Jesse Chang, a 3D industry expert, “was very concerned with the shortage and how dire the situation was to have forced hospital workers use loose-fitting bandanas and surgical masks for protection, when N95 masks were required”, and felt he could do something to help alleviate the problem.
Chang also had a personal conection to the situation, as his younger brother and his sister-in law, are healthcare workers, in the frontlines of the fight against Covid-19.

So, he put together a team, which includes Dr. Stanley Yung-Chuan Liu, facial skeletal and sleep apnea surgeon, and 50 other volunteers with backgrounds in design, science, engineering and medicine. Together, they launched the My Mask Movement, which aims to provide healthcare workers with protective face masks personalized to fit their facial features.

Through an app they’ve developed, that uses smartphones built-in face scan technology, users can scan their faces, select a mask design and send to printing. The masks will be manufactured and then shipped directly to the healthcare worker.

The underlying mask designs are based on open source designs that have been tested in clinical settings and been approved by the National Institute of Health. Each component of the masks can be easily sterilized and reused.
