ALS patient creates application for people unable to speak

Shared by carolinabento on 2021-08-18 10:30

About the solution

When he became speechless in mid-2014 due to Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), José Afonso Braga started using communication and spelling tables, but the process was very tiring. "For more than a year I tested several communication applications that transform text into speech. After being dissatisfied with all of them, I decided to put my experience in software development into practice and make my own application", he explained.
That's when he discovered eye tracking technology, which converts eye movement into computer mouse operations, thus creating the WeCanSpeak application. This application allows you not only to help people who are diagnosed with ALS, but also all those who have speech disorders. It is a free application that is exclusively designed for speaking with special features like user-customized dictionary, advanced search engine and message history.
After a year available on the Microsoft Store, the application has already 1700 users in 90 countries.
