About the solution
Saïda is profoundly deaf, and although she was born hard of hearing, no one knew about her hearing disability until she was eight or nine years old. At 10 she was then introduced to the world of sounds by wearing hearing aids, where the first thing she ever heard was the sound of an air conditioner and two people talking in a room. At that moment, she realized that each person has a unique voice of their own and that everything has a sound.
Although hearing aids allowed her to hear and listen, by the time she was 12, her hearing levels began to decrease. This made her feel disconnected from the world around her, and at 16, she became deaf.
Ever since then she has been searching for resources and assistive technology to aid her with communication, but never found one that would meet her needs.
Even though she has learned to live in a hearing world, she understands that the majority of people around her are equipped with a communication tool that she doesn't have, a thing that even hearing aids, cochlear implants, and American Sign Language (ASL) cannot fully meet.
For the hearing-loss community, understanding verbal communication means guessing every word of a conversation by watching people’s lips and mouths as they talk, which makes them miss important parts of the conversation and worry about things like the amount of light in an environment, facial hair, accent, and so on.
This is why she came up with Comunify, an app that displays conversation visibly by separately transcribing each speaker’s words and color-coding them to make it easier to identify who is saying what. This allows hard-of-hearing individuals to have easier access to the conversations happening all around them and better contribute to the world we’re all living in.
