AV1, a Norweagian robot to fight isolation for children with illnesses

Shared by Gemma Tria on 2025-02-10 12:53

About the solution

The result of Karen’s vision is AV1, a telepresence robot designed to combat the isolation experienced by children who are unable to attend school due to illness. Developed over many months with the help of a dedicated team including children, teachers, scientists, and healthcare professionals, the AV1 robot allows children to connect to their schools through an app that controls the robot. This connection ensures that children can continue their education alongside their peers, participate in class, and remain socially engaged despite their physical absence. The robot helps students maintain a sense of belonging and supports their emotional and social development, both of which are crucial for their recovery.

The AV1 robot fosters essential social interactions, play, and communication skills that children often miss out on when they are isolated. The ability to interact with friends and teachers significantly eases the transition back into school once the child’s health improves, helping them reintegrate socially and academically with greater ease.

No Isolation primarily targets schools, hospitals, and healthcare providers as the main customers for the AV1 robots. The robots are rented or purchased by these institutions, which then use them to connect children who are absent due to illness with their classrooms. Since its launch, AV1 has become a widely successful solution, with over 3,000 units deployed across 17 countries in Europe, supporting more than 10,000 children in over 2,500 schools. For instance, schools in the UK, such as Moulsham High School and The Kingsbrook School, have integrated AV1 robots to support students with medical needs, anxiety, and absenteeism. These case studies highlight how AV1 not only ensures educational continuity but also enhances social interaction and emotional well-being for patient students.

AV1 has helped reduce school absenteeism, a major challenge in education, by allowing students to stay involved in school life while recuperating. The solution has garnered numerous awards, including recognition as one of the World’s Top 50 Women in Tech by Forbes and the EU Prize for Women Innovators. No Isolation continues to expand its reach, partnering with over 600 organizations, including charities, hospitals, and schools. The company's commitment to solving the problem of social isolation in children has positioned it as a leader in innovation, recognized for both its social impact and its contribution to education technology.

About the author

No Isolation is a Norwegian startup founded by Karen Dolva in 2015 after meeting Anna Fi, a mother whose child had lost her battle with cancer. During the child’s illness, Anna shared the isolation she felt from school and everyday life, which intensified her emotional and physical suffering. This conversation ignited Karen's drive to create technology that could help combat the loneliness experienced by children facing long-term illness.
