Dad Invents Sleep Device for daughter with Narcolepsy

About the solution

When his daughter, Jessica, a 17-year-old senior in high school, began having a difficult time staying awake in class her dad, Michael Larson, took her to a number of doctors trying to find out what she had. And after many trips to the hospital, she was diagnosed with narcolepsy - a neurological disorder that can send a brain signal for a person to fall asleep at any given time, against their will.

After this, Michael began thinking on how to help his kid improve her sleep quality, as in addition to daytime drowsiness and uncontrollable sleep episodes, most individuals with this disease also experience poor sleep quality that can involve frequent waking during nighttime sleep. He continued seeing hir daughter sleep quality deteriorate , which led her to taking sleep-aid medication so she could get more continuous sleep at night. Unfortunately this had a very serious side effect, the loss of appetite which made her not eat properly, and not soon after being hospitalized for undernourishment.

Looking at her daughter in this state of suffering he began to learn about sleep patterns, and became a member of the Sleep Research Society where he began to understand the role of the brain in sleep. This is where he came up with a non-pharmaceutical solution for sleep,by finding a way to help the brain slow down- The Sleep Shepherd.

This device- The Sleep Shepherd- is a a home sleep hat that monitors brainwaves and helps the user fall asleep quickly through the use of specially-engineered binaural beats, or sound illusions that are created by piping slightly different tones into each ear by it's built in thin speakers that deliver low-frequency sounds to each ear. Apart from the physical device , there is also a smartphone app associated with the headband that provides access to an alarm feature, which plays the beats in reverse and eases you out of a deep sleep.

Larson said he's pleased that his daughter Jessica, who was the first person to use the device, has slept with it on every night for over a year.
