About the solution
A small team of three, at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab, has developed a pendant designed to help people avoid touching their face. This invention was created amidst the Covid-19 pandemic, following the World Health Organization’s recommendation that people should avoid touching their faces to help prevent infections by the new coronavirus.
The device, called PULSE, is pendant that hangs on a necklace, meant to be worn around the neck, 6 inches (15 centimetres) below the chin. The pendant is equipped with a sensor and a vibrating motor, so it pulses whenever the wearer’s hand gets close to their face.
The designs and assembly instructions for this device are fully available online. The team states that “PULSE is a simple and affordable technology that can easily be reproduced by anyone regardless of their level of expertise”. To reproduce this device, someone would only need a Home-Class 3D-printer, a soldering tool, a sensor, a vibrating motor a few other readily available materials.
At the official webpage the team shares their hope that “individuals or companies will replicate, refine or enhance PULSE and make it easily available for distribution.”
