Woman with cerebral palsy develops online community

Shared by Ana Duarte on 2019-09-07 00:31

About the solution

Katy started writing about her condition online in 2009, on her blog, then called TeenCP, which was rebranded to Cerebral Palsy Strong in 2017. She used her blog as an outlet and gained a loyal following of teenagers who were happy to find someone they could relate to, with the same problems.

“The mission of About Cerebral Palsy is to provide up-to-date, evidence-based and reliable information to assist people with cerebral palsy, their families and clinicians to understand cerebral palsy and to make informed decisions about interventions and therapies. About Cerebral Palsy is written by fully qualified health professionals, in consultation with people with cerebral palsy and their families”, says on Cerebral Palsy Strong.

At the beginning, Katy didn’t know anyone with cerebral palsy. So the website helped her feel more accepted and less lonely.

“I was able to downplay it, but growing up in Huntington Beach and Orange County, there are some insecurities of being more self-aware, and I felt like I needed extra support nobody else could provide me except for therapy,” she explained.
