About the solution
Eyal is an entrepreneur who has three children. He built them a swimming pool and was always worried about safety.
One day, the entrepreneur read about an Israel girl who drowned in a private swimming pool. That’s when he decided to take action and develop a device to safe kids from drowning.
And so Coral Manta (the device was named after the girl who drowned) was born. According to the inventor, this is the first and only computer vision-based drowning detection system for private pools.
The gadget has a built-in camera and is positioned on the side of the pool, assisted by a smartphone app. With this app, the parents can know whenever someone enters the pool.
The camera works by using software that tracks people and objects in the pool, detecting drowning risks. If someone is not moving for 15 seconds, the app triggers an alarm. It even sends images to the phone.
The system doesn’t require professional installation and works on solar energy.
"When my youngest daughter was four, we visited friends who had a swimming pool. I was sitting with her at the edge of the pool. She was just next to me. I wasn't paying attention for only a second and she slipped into the water. I was shocked by the fact that she immediately began to sink, and that she did not make any sound. It turns out this is the reaction of any toddler in this situation. It is called 'quiet drowning.' This event had a happy end. Unfortunately, many others do not. Almost every parent has a near-drowning event story”, he recalled.
Coral Manta was tested in thousands of scenarios simulating drowning events, in a wide variety of swimming pools, with both adults and children.
The device costs about $2,000 and can be bought online.
