About the solution
CoughDrop was founded by Brian Whitmer, a software developer and entrepreneur searching for a reliable communication system for his daughter with Rett Syndrome. Due to his background in usability, he became frustrated with outdated technology and poor design decisions, so he collaborated with over 30 SLPs, OTs, and AT specialists to develop a better solution. CoughDrop is an open-source platform that features open-licensed content, including free symbols and community-generated boards. All its vocabulary sets are released under a Creative Commons license, making it easy to collaborate and share resources with teams worldwide.
CoughDrop not only serves as a communication system for individuals but also as a collaboration tool for the entire support team. It provides built-in reports, goals, messaging, and video-recording tools that enable effective teamwork and ensure everyone is on the same page. Additionally, CoughDrop has various vocabulary sets for different levels, with built-in supports, assessment tools, and vocabulary progression tools that allow for a gradual increase in complexity over time.
As one of the most flexible apps available, CoughDrop supports two-way messaging, remote modeling, eye or head tracking, and switches to provide users with more flexibility and support. The company strives to enhance assistive technology without breaking the bank, promoting open standards and access, and empowering communicators to create the solution that works best for them.
