Car Swing

Shared by Bridgemo on 2018-03-26 05:18

About the solution

When my mother-in-law had a stroke, her partial paralysis made it difficult to get her in and our of our car to go places. I had come up with an idea but have not had the money, or the time to devote to the creation of this idea. It involves creating a metal rack that would fit over or around a front seat in a car and have a swing out arm to assist in the placement of the person into the vehicle. it may not have to wing but also just slide in and out. there could be a webbing type "swing" to sit in the wheelchair, have the person sit in it and then connect the swing to the arm to slide or swing into the car. the person can stay in the web swing as it would connect or disconnect from the arm allowing ease of movement from the vehicle. It could be adjustable to allow multiple vehicle fits and also allow for different body heights or types. it would need to be as simple as a child's car seat to install.

About the author

I had moved my mother-in-law many times into my car from a wheelchair. She was a very private woman with strong feelings for propriety and personal space and having to wrap my arms around her to lift her, feeling her weight was embarrassing to her and made me feel like the violator of her trust. To have a swing to allow her some space on getting in and out of a car would have increased the comfortableness of her traveling. She ended up becoming more secluded at her nursing home than go through that experience of getting out.
