Patient creates bicycle that doesn’t require the use of legs

About the solution

Because mobility aids in his country are too expensive, he built his own solution, so that he could able to use a mobility device which doesn’t depend on his legs and can still move him around, being low cost.

“My father did not have any money for me so I never went to school. I have never ‘learned’ anything. I always enjoyed repairing my bike and that is why I ended up building wheelchairs”, he explained.

In order to help others in similar conditions, Robert created the Mboyo Foundation, in 1997, which offers free wheelchairs and other walkers for those in need, at a better prince. A single crutch can cost around 15 euros and a wheelchair up to 300 euros.

“Many people living with a disability cannot find a job and many are not educated,” said the inventor.

About the author

Robert Mboyo, born in the Democratic Republic of Congo, in 1980, contracted polio at a young age and lost the use of his left leg from the hip down. So he invented a mobility device that allows him to use hands instead of feet on the pedals.
