About the solution
It all started when back to 2002 Jeffrey Brewer's son was diagnosed of Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) at age 7. Nurses taught the Brewers how to inject the insulin and how to prick his son's finger for the drop of blood to test his blood-sugar level with a little meter. They learned a simple algorithm: If their son's blood sugar was this high, give him so many units of insulin; if it was this much higher, give him that much more. It's a crude scale that everyone that has type 1 diabetics makes do with daily. Brewer was shocked by the antiquated approach. "I had this logbook," he says. "I'm testing my son every few hours, and I'm thinking, this is crying out for automation. A computer should do this and would do it better. Why didn't this exist, with all that we can do?"
At first Brewer founded and launched the Artificial Pancreas Project along with JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation), then he became JDRF’s CEO where he forged partnerships with industry to drive medical device innovation in diabetes. It wasn't until 2014 that alongside Bryan Mazlish, an expert in medical devices and software who also has a diabetic son, Brewer cofounded Bigfoot Biomedical, a medical technology company that aims to revolutionize the way people with diabetes manage their condition. Unlike others, they are looking at insulin therapy holistically and utilizing services, support, and novel business models. Partnered with health care providers BigFoot Biomedical's aim is to deliver simple, connected, and comprehensive solutions for the large number of people who have been overlooked by diabetes innovation.
The company develops smart insulin delivery systems that use artificial intelligence and machine learning to automate insulin dosing and improve glucose control in people with diabetes. Their flagship product, the Bigfoot Unity Diabetes Management System, is an integrated platform that combines insulin delivery, continuous glucose monitoring, and data management trough and App to provide personalized insulin dosing recommendations. The system is supposed to be a real-time partner that reduces the burden of daily self-care tasks and minimizes the risk of complications, enhancing quality of life of diabetic people. The Bigfoot Unity System is the first and only FDA cleared solution for people with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes on multiple daily injection insulin therapy. The dose, which is based upon instructions from the person's health care provider, is displayed directly on proprietary, connected smart caps of the person's disposable insulin pens. Cleared for use by individuals aged 12 and up, the system is designed to clearly, and in real time, help answer the question, “How much insulin would my doctor recommend I take right now?”
