Boy develops walker for his grandfather

Shared by Shuyue Zhang on 2018-01-26 11:32

About the solution

Being a farmer all his life, Lishan Gao suddenly got a cerebral infarction, which led to hemiplegia, in July 2015, at the age of 74. After that, he could only stay in bed and wasn’t able to speak properly.

During the summer of 2016, Lishan Gao’s grandson, Yunlong Gao, was working temporarily after finishing his sophomore year in the university. Seeing his grandfather suffering from hemiplegia, Yunlong Gao was determined to apply the mechanical knowledge that he learned to design a walker for him. So, he drew the draft on paper, purchased the materials and worked with his father to build the prototype; they also modified the wheelchair to make them better connected. After multiple experiments and modifications, the multifunctional walker was finally developed.

“The multifunctional walker is designed especially for patients with severe hemiplegia”, said Yunlong Gao. Currently, there is only a wheelchair or a separate walker on the market, and neither of them could possibly achieve good effect and ensure the body balance. The new design enables the patient to stand up and sit down without external assistance, do rehabilitation exercises to increase muscle intensity, and rest at ease when feeling fatigue – either to eat or to watch movies with a tablet equipped into the device.

The Walker designed by Yunlong Gao has greatly improved the life quality of his grandfather, whose hands and legs recovered some feeling and could even move occasionally. Yunlong Gao’s innovations was also reported by the local media and received a lot of praise. The daughter of a patient with similar situation contacted Yunlong Gao to have one for her father, and Yunlong Gao has already started working on it after having more information on the condition of the patient. Besides, Yunlong Gao is more than glad to share his solution with other people in need.
