Parents develop sunshine roof for their disabled son

Regina and her husband like to go to Italy to enjoy the sun. After their son Christian was born with multiple disabilities, which forced him to use a wheelchair, they had to think of a solution to protect him in the wheelchair from the sunlight.

The only solution they found suitable for the wheelchair was actually meant for sunbeds, but at least it protected his face. In order to expand the protection to his upper body, they developed a new roof that is adjustable in many ways.

Father invents new musical instrument for his son

Family Veeh has always made a lot of music at home, either with violin, cello or harmonium. They quickly observed that their son Andreas, who was born with Down Syndrome, shared this passion for music. But due to his condition, it seemed impossible that Andreas would be able to make music on his own, at least with existing instruments. Hence, his father invented the Veeh-Harve, a stringed instrument suited to the Andreas’ abilities.

Association develops wheelchairs to enable ice skating for disabled people

Chenderhärz has been founded by Reto since his son suffered from a congenital defect and had to undergo several surgeries. Tino received advanced treatment in Switzerland that saved his life. As Reto became aware of this, he founded the association to collect money for helping people in need. The association fosters contact between disabled and nondisabled people. Therefore, they adapted a wheelchair so that it can be used for ice skating.

Woman creates ponchos for wheelchair users

Brigitta has not thought about commercializing her idea, she simply wanted to create a poncho for her daughter, who uses a wheelchair. But since 2010 the senior woman became an entrepreneur and commercializes Brigitta's Rolljack, ponchos for rainy days, warmer ones as well as cotton capes for winter days.

Father develops communication app for physicians and patients

When his daughter had symptoms of skin rash on a holiday trip abroad, his wife texted and sent a picture to a friend, a physician. Following his instructions, the problem was solved fast.

That is how Simon Bolz was in inspired to found a company to develop a messaging app for managing relationships between healthcare professionals and providers (pharmacists, billers, therapists) and patients.

Klara provides sending of test results, a messaging platform to ask and answer questions as well as modern features like push notification and reading prescriptions.

Engineer develops bionic robotic arm for himself

Maksim Lyashko decided to build a bionic artificial arm, after he lost his right arm in a mine in 2013. He calls his project "MaxBionic" and started working on the prosthesis immediately when he left the hospital, as he found out that existing prosthesis were expensive and not worth the money.

Students invent fixture for treating malformation of jawbone

As the two students had to come up with a diploma project, Michael remembered the six surgeries he had to undergo due to the malformation of his jaw. They decided to ease the pain of patients like him and developed this solution.

They were assisted by the AKH Linz and the FH Hagenberg and presented numerous versions to dentists and dental technicians. In the end, the fixture consisted of a cleft palate, which is screwed to the jawbone.

“With this solution, we prevent the hard pain which is caused on the mucosa by existing products”, states the innovator.

Mother invents device to help her daughter regain walking ability

Due to a stroke, Dindia Gutmann is paralyzed on one side since she was born. Her condition makes independent movement nearly impossible. Since there was no therapy available which was efficient in the longterm, her mother Anna decided to develop a device for posture and movement correction. During development, she had always been assisted by her daughter.

Boy creates 3D printed mechanical hand for a teacher

Calramon has always been interested in 3D printing. His interest arose from the Disney film “Big Hero 6”. When he met Nick in a library, he decided to take the challenge and assisted by his father and his brother, he developed a prosthetic hand for the man, printed on their own 3D printer.

A group of Nick’s friends has been searching for a way to help him by developing a 3D printed prosthesis for him. They had already started to work with “Enabling the Future”, a platform which enables users to use their own 3D printer at home by providing open source blueprints.

Mother develops Asthma kit for her son

Sabine Engel, a German mother, developed a first aid kit for her son Benedikt, who is restricted in his daily life due to Asthma attacks.

To instruct other people how to help her son in case of Asthma attacks, the design of the kit was adapted to laymen. It consists of an illustrated instruction how to help in emergencies, crucial medication and the power of attorney.

“The teachers did not know how to help him, so they either sent him home, called me to pick him up or even called the ambulance to take him to a hospital”, Benedikt’s mother says.

Patient with Arthritis creates walking device

Philipp Heist, a German inventor, could hardly leave his house, due to his progressive osteoarthritis. A wheelchair was no option and so he developed the “Gehrad”, a walking aid to become more mobile and autonomous again.
