About the solution

AppDermis is an online platform (connected web-based and mobile app) for eczema (atopic dermatitis) patients, HCPs and experts to help each other learn how to manage eczema.

Up to 20% of children and 4% of adults suffer from eczema. That is more than 100 million patients just in Europe. These patients suffer from severe itching, dry and inflamed skin, social isolation and often depression. Only 15% of patients are highly satisfied with their current treatment. 84% of patients still report having eczema even while being treated and 70% are searching for new and more efficient treatment options (source: EUROPEAN REPORT: Itching for life 2018).

The goal of AppDermis is to use the latest technology to facilitate an effective flow of information between patients, HCPs and experts, which is trustworthy, easy to understand and personalized while saving time and money and improving the patient-doctor relationship:
Credible and trustworthy: Curated content and co-developed
Personalized: Using AI and Big Data to profile personalization
Saving time and money: Structured information and building on reviews of other patients
Easily understandable: Complex information digested into understandable format

For patients: The platform provides patients with eczema a toolkit for their long-term management of their condition. This toolkit allows the patients to:
Monitor their eczema via an eczema tracker: taking photos and notes
Share the progress of their condition with their healthcare professional: via downloadable and shareable report
Connect to other patients for support and to share product and treatment reviews: via forums and rating scales
Find information curated by healthcare professionals regarding how to manage their eczema long-term

For HCPs: The platforms allows the healthcare professionals to gain a better understanding of the developments of the patients’ condition between appointments, use the appointment time spent with the patients more effective and build a more trusted relationship with the patient by:
Gain access to easy-to-read information about the progress of the patients’ condition between appointments to better prepare for the appointments and to prioritize time spent
Educate the patient about their condition by pointing to information on the online platform curated by fellow healthcare professionals

For experts such as the industry: The platform helps to build a strong relationship with both the patients and the healthcare professionals by:
Providing the patients with a toolkit to manage their eczema, which they may use throughout their life to find a long-term solution
Helping the healthcare professionals provide better services to patients by having a monitoring and education tool, which accelerates the process of finding a long-term solution to eczema
Becoming part of the patient and doctor community and gaining new insights into the needs and preferences of both

About the author

I've been struggling with eczema since I was born and even now in my 30s I continue to battle with it. I realized that in order to find a long-term way of managing my flare ups, I need to understand it better. So I began looking for information and talking to other eczema patients and experts. In the end I found out that there is a huge amount of knowledge already out there and still many questions to be answered. It is why AppDermis was born -our aim is to help patients, doctors & experts to help each other learn about how to manage eczema by efficiently sharing information between each other
