About the solution
Lora Brugnaro sofre de paralisia cerebral que compromete seu equilíbrio. Ela usa caminhantes disponíveis no mercado, mas geralmente são instáveis e não atendem às suas necessidades. Durante a sexta Assistathon Technologies Hackathon (ATHack), um evento organizado pelo Massachusetts Institute of Technology, ela foi emparelhada com alguns alunos do MIT e eles criaram um caminhante mais estável.
"Há muito tempo, sinto que a escolha diária que fiz entre segurança e convivência com liberdade de movimento foi uma escolha desnecessária baseada em design deficiente", disse Lora.
Para identificar as necessidades e os desafios de Lora, Zoe, um membro da equipe, percorreu a jornada diária de Lora, casa-trabalho-casa, gravando vídeos para compartilhar com o resto da equipe. "Conversei com muitas pessoas sobre minhas lutas; ninguém nunca ofereceu soluções ou sugeriu que possa haver alguma. É deprimente e humilhante quando as empresas ignoram seus comentários e os profissionais médicos parecem satisfeitos com as opções padrão", diz Lora.
No final do ATHack, as equipes vencedoras foram selecionadas. A equipe de Lora venceu na categoria colaboração de co-designer. Após o ATHack, Lora tinha um andador melhorado e ela continuava sugerindo a Zoe o que poderia ser corrigido. "Finalmente, tenho meu veículo pessoal, com um sistema de freio que realmente freia e um sistema de rodas que fornece 100% de estabilidade", disse ela. Ela espera levar o design para outras pessoas com problemas de mobilidade.
