Girl develops kit to help deal with Lyme’s disease

About the solution

After she recovered, the girl realised that there was almost no information about tick bites. So she decided that it was important to create awareness around this subject.

Lyme’s disease consists of an infectious disease caused by a bacterium named Borrelia spread by ticks. The symptoms can include a high temperature of 38C or above, muscle and joint pain and swelling or neurological symptoms, such as temporary paralysis of the facial muscles.

The Tick Kit consists of a kit that gathers easy-to-use products to treat tick bites, with instructions. It contains two tick twisters, two circle plasters, two antiseptic wipes, and a pair of rubber gloves.

Ali and her classmates entered the Junior Entrepreneur Programme 2019 and sold 185 Tick Kits, ended up making a profit of €569.90 (each kit costs 8€).

The Tick Kit won the Community Champions Award Project at the Junior Entrepreneur Project Showcase Day, in 2018.

Ali O’Donoghue, born in 2006, in Ireland, was in the 6th grade when she came up with Tick Kit, a compact kit to help deal with Lyme’s disease, an infectious disease caused by a bacterium named Borrelia spread by ticks. She created this device in 2018, after getting bitten by a tick.
