About the solution
Ella Casano has been diagnosed with idiopathic thrombocytopenia purpura. The disease destroys the platelets in her blood, and due to that, she has to go to the hospital every eight weeks, where she receives intravenous therapy through an IV bag.
Due to her experience, Ella knows how this process can be intimidating for children, and so she invented a solution to make the process less scary. Her invention is called Medi Teddy, which consists of a pouch on the back of a teddy bear that holds the IV bags.
The Medi Teddy looks like a regular teddy bear. However, the back has a mesh pouch where the IV bag is going. This way, the kids being treated don't have to see the fluids that are in the bags. The medical staff will still be able to see and check the bags. It provides a break from the cold, sterile environment of most hospitals.
"When I had my first infusion, I was surprised and a little bit intimidated by the look of the amount of tubing and medical equipment on my IV pole. As I saw more and more children experiencing the same feelings, I became more interested in creating a friendlier experience for young IV patients, so I created Medi Teddy. I hope that Medi Teddy helps you just as much as it helps me!", Ella posted on her website.
Ella has since patented the invention and already has prototypes.
