About the solution

A group of Spanish organizations and Institutions got together in a consortium to work together to build an emergency ventilator, to overcome the equipment shortages caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. The work is being developed by an alliance between Consorci de la Zona Franca de Barcelona, HP and Leitat, together with CatSalut, Consorci Sanitari de Terrassa and the Hospital Parc Taulí.

The ventilator they’ve developed is called LEITAT 1 and was designed to have the least possible degree of complexity, so it could be developed and produced quickly. The device has features such as a volumetric sensor, pressure sensors and oxygen alarms, to guarantee maximum performance and facilitate use by healthcare professionals.

“This is an emergency respirator, for an emergency situation, designed with 3D technologies and incorporating other parts found on the market. Assembly is very fast, so we can produce about 100 of them per day”, explained Manel Balcells, Health Commissioner at the Leitat Technology Centre

The device went through a series of tests and trials and received medical validation by Dr. Lluís Blanch, Innovation Director of Hospital Parc Taulí Hospital de Sabadell, an expert in mechanical ventilation. Since then, it has been approved by the Spanish Medicines Agency and gone to production, to be distributed among healthcare facilities.

The work Is ongoing, with the team developing a new iteration of the device, Leitat 2, to adapt the model according to the recommendation made by the Spanish Medicines Agency.
