Mum invents a new way to secure her kid

About the solution

Natalie always wondered what would happen if she was in an accident with her daughter in the car and was unable to let the doctors know that her daughter could not have a MRI due to having a cochlear implant. This innovative mother shared this worry on her website, Personalized by Nat, just to find many other parents of children with special needs have the same exact fear. There is no better advocate for a child's needs than their parents, but when this link is missing, there is a need for the information to be conveyed in the best possible way.

Drawing from her experiences with her daughter Shae, who has a cochlear implant, this mom developed a special cover that goes over a seat belt, which allows first responders to be aware of her child’s needs in case of emergency, in this particular case, the magnetic field of the MRI, which could potentially cause some damage to Shae, who was born with hearing loss.

After sharing her personalized strap on Facebook, Bell has received requests from parents with children who have various sorts of disabilities, adapting the strap to each child's needs. For example, for children with autism, the strap states that the child is autistic and may resist help, or in the case of youngsters who have dextrocardia (whereby the heart is on the right-hand side of the body instead of the left) the medical team will know straight away in case of the need for resuscitation.

The clever strap is portable so can also be attached to backpacks, or seatbelts. It is also useful for adults who may have particular conditions, such as Alzheimer’s.

Natalie has an online shop that sells personalized products available on Amazon for $16.
