Portuguese girl guides invent a pillow to ease the discomfort of a mastectomy.

It all started with a conversation with their leader Ana, who explained to them that a simple heart shaped pillow could bring the comfort that is so often lacking after this procedure. At the moment there are already small rectangular-shaped pillows that are provided by the hospitals in order to ease this type of discomfort, but they are not well fitted and don't provide as much pressure release as the heart shaped ones.

These type of heart shaped pillows fit comfortably under the armpit, thus helping to alleviate incision pain after surgery, tackling the discomfort of the consequent edema and aiding the tension in the shoulders, while also protecting against possible incidents.

Even though the main focus is on pain management and post-operation outcome improvement, there is also a desire to provide these people with not only an increased level of comfort, but also a certain joy through the color and the different patterns that these pillows have. The girl guides soon realized that it was fundamental to create, above all, a project whose main purpose was to return the smile to people struggling with breast cancer all while improving their recuperation after surgery.

During Pink October celebrations, in Mangualde, 66 kits were delivered to the Regional Nucleus of the Portuguese League Against Cancer, with the aim of having them distributed to identified patients and/or hospitals. These kits consist of a pillow and a bag that serves to "hide" the post-operative drain.

As the moto for this campaign, they choose "#LutaremosSemprePorSorrisos" (We will always fight for smiles).
