Team develops Field Emergency Ventilator system

Shared by Ana Ribeiro on 2020-04-01 22:29

About the solution

Colin Keogh, Conall Laverty and David Pollard created Open Source Ventilator (OSV) Ireland, a project focused on gathering volunteers to work on the development of a Field Emergency Ventilator. The group got together through a Facebook group dedicated to finding solutions for the severe lack of medical supplies that was being felt by healthcare services throughout the World, as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The OSV Ireland project counts with the participation of engineers, designers and medical practitioners. In partnership with a developers team in Canada they are working on a new open-source product called OpenLung, a low-cost emergency respirator based on an Ambu bag. The device is intended to be simple, easy to use and made up of mostly 3D printed parts, so it can be easily mass produced and rapidly deployed.

The team has been working closely with healthcare workers and experts to ensure that the final product is viable, reliable and prioritizes patient safety.

The project is ongoing and open to accept contributions from everyone interested in joining the team. All the information regarding the project ad the design is being kept open-source and is available online.
