Couple invent girdle for pelvic pain during pregnancy

Shared by Katie Patient on 2017-07-05 10:20

About the solution

When Ruth was carrying her fourth child, her pregnancy caused so much pain that she was confined to a wheelchair after just 16 weeks of pregnancy, and spent the majority of her pregnancy reliant on her family as caregivers. Ruth suffered from severe Pelvic Girdle Pain and her experiences, along with her husband Dafydd’s expertise from running a clothing manufacturing business, inspired the creation of the pelvic girdle.

Ruth initially tried using traditional maternity belts, medication and physiotherapy to try and ease her pain. However, after nothing already on the market seemed to help, Dafydd looked to create his own solution. ‘’I was using towels and dressing gowns to hold my hips together and then Dafydd said he could make me something similar", Ruth explained.

Each day Dafydd would come home with new materials, testing to see what worked best, and after seven and a half months of pregnancy, the final prototype was finished. This harness immediately brought Ruth a huge sense of relief, saying, “it just gave me that tiny bit of independence and meant I could get out of bed.”

The girdle itself can fasten anywhere on the fabric, meaning it can be work whenever the user desires throughout their pregnancy, apart for during sleep. Ruth and Dafydd both emphasised the importance of comfort in the development of their product, and say the fabric is entirely breathable whilst providing support for the back and the weight of the baby.

The pelvic girdle is being sold with a retail price of £149 each.
