About the solution
Mario is Francesca and Roberto's son had a stroke 10 days after his birth. This was so extensive, that long-lasting consequences affect little Mario to this day, with epilepsy and cerebral palsy being two of the many conditions that have been diagnosed.
When living day to day with the various challenges of this reality, they discovered that there was a large need for the spread of knowledge and support for families impacted by the management of a young stroke survivor with Cerebral Palsy, and this is how FightTheStroke came to life! This foundation (FightTheStroke) has three major goals: Responding to the need for knowledge of families impacted by the management of a young stroke survivor with a disability of Cerebral Palsy, educate to the awareness that children, even the unborn ones, can be affected by brain damage in an early stage of their life and Inspire new generations by encouraging research and adoption of 'disruptive' therapies for people with a neurodevelopmental disease.
Through their work, FightTheStroke with the help of Microsoft has developed MirrorHR, an epilepsy research kit for kids, which is basically a mobile app connected to a wearable device that sends alerts when anomalous activity could indicate a seizure. The system helps alleviate fears that a seizure could lead to SUDEP, which stands for sudden unexpected death in epilepsy.
If a seizure is about to happen, parents can detect it early and take immediate action, such as preventing falls or ensuring that the child does not swallow its own vomit. This means that parents are less likely to have to rush to the Emergency room.
Biometric data and daily video logs are then stored on a Microsoft Azure FHIR server, and machine learning plus data visualization techniques are applied to this information to provide parents and doctors with easy-to-interpret visuals and information using Power BI tools.
