About the solution
Violet Orrick, suffered from separation anxiety while attending nursery when she was four years old.
This led her to create a ‘hug button’. It started with Violet drawing of a heart on her arm that she can press and when she misses her parents, and which would allow her to send love and a warm hug to them. The parents also have a button matching on their arm. The hug button is composed of a 'V' for Violet and an 'M' for mummy.
The button has helped cope with missing her parents at school. “The hug button has helped my daughter find a little way of ‘taking control’ of her anxiety. So, if she was feeling a little bit lost at school or missed me, Violet knew that she had that on her, and she could press it. It comforted me to know that it comforted her”, said her mother, Leanne Orrick.
Leanne hopes that her daughter’s idea will raise awareness about separation anxiety and believes other parents shouldn’t avoid their children’s emotions.
She has now made her daughter’s hug button into temporary tattoos available for sale on Etsy, an online selling platform, to help other families. Parents can buy a pack of 18 temporary 'hug buttons' for £5.99. Different buyers have reviewed the solution and said it helped their children settle.
