About the solution
During the Covid-19 pandemic, Rahul Khanna D (known as “the lonely programmer”) decided to use his skills as a Computer Vision Engineer to create a solution that would help fight the coronavirus.
He created a system that is able to determine if a person is wearing a mask or not. His system was idealized as a security measure, to be used as a way to determine if people can be allowed to enter public places, based on whether they’re wearing a protective face mask. As the inventor states on the project’s page, “this project can be used in the hospital, market, bus terminals, restaurants, and other public gatherings where the monitoring has to be done.”
The projects consist of connecting a camera to a small micro-computer, loaded with a model created to be able to identify the presence or absence of a face mask. This system is then connected to a buzzer and light indicator. So, when a person steps in front of the camera, the system scans for the presence of a face mask: if the person is wearing the mask, a green light is shown; if the person is not wearing a mask, a red light appears along with an alarm – potentially alerting security that someone without a facemask is trying to enter the building.
The complete set of materials and instructions to replicate this project are available at: https://www.hackster.io/rahulkhanna/covid-19-authorized-entry-using-face...
