At just 5 years old, Vennela invented a teddy bear to help her sleep

About the solution

When kindergartener Vennela Attili struggled to fall asleep on her own, her mother would sit beside her, gently patting her back until she drifted off. But often, her mother would fall asleep first, leaving Vennela still wide awake.
Inspired by a school assignment to invent something useful, Vennela decided to create a solution to her own problem (she was just five years old!). Using a teddy bear, cloth, sticks, and a vibrating motor, she built a prototype of Happy Sleep—a stuffed animal designed to mimic the warmth, gentle movements, and breathing sounds of a living being. The goal was to recreate the comforting presence of a caregiver to help children fall asleep more easily.
Vennela presented the first version of Happy Sleep at the 2019 California Invention Convention, where she received a Merit Award. In 2021, her invention was granted U.S. Patent 11,020,678 B2. She hopes it will offer comfort to children experiencing illness, particularly those undergoing chemotherapy or in hospital isolation.
