Team develops app to help young people coping with grief

Shared by Ana Duarte on 2019-10-16 15:12

About the solution

Louis is a child and family psychotherapist. He had the idea for this solution at a hospice in London while helping parents with a terminal illness talk to their children about coming to the end of their life.

Jamie, on the other hand, lost his dad to cancer when he was a teenager. At the time, he trying to cope with this loss by drinking, using drugs and joining gangs. "I was always drunk, I was always finding ways to escape reality through drugs, through gangs. That support I had from my dad I was always looking for it and the only thing that was really there was gangs”, he explained.

Because of this, Jamie got suspended from school. He was able to find some solace in online gaming. It also became therapeutic for him to speak with the people he played online.

“The game helps young people by:

- Developing emotional literacy and wisdom around death
- Sharing stories from other people in similar situations
- Providing tailored mindfulness meditations by the rockpool
- Encouraging important and difficult conversations with loved ones using in-app quests”, says on the official website.

The app is free and available for iOS and Android in the UK, EU, Canada, Australia and New Zeland.

The team now plans to make the app available in the USA and translate it into various languages.
