About the solution
The idea for this app because Brian Gitta, born in 1992, suffered from Malaria several times as a child, and he developed needle phobia. So he teamed up with fellow students from Computer Science and created the app and their company.
“I was already getting injections three times a day to fight off a foodborne illness. But as my fever spiked and the pain in my joints worsened, I suspected I was suffering yet another occurrence of malaria, the disease I had contracted as a child and currently kills one child every minute in the developing world,” Brian explained.
Matibabu allows to help to diagnose this disease without the need for blood tests, without a sting, without a microscope and or going through a medical laboratory, using light and magnetism.
It works by having the patient introducing his index finger in the Matiscope, an infrared detector connected to a smartphone. Then the app uses infrared emissions to penetrate the skin and detect red blood cells, making possible to determine not only the presence of the parasite that causes malaria (the plasmodium), but also the genus and the number of parasites.
The app analyzes the data transmitted by the Matiscope and displays the diagnosis in a few seconds. The results are directly stored on the Skydrive online server and can be transmitted quickly to medical professionals.
