Since our last newsletter, a lot of things have happened and here are a few of the main ones. | • Patient Innovation Anniversary Week | At the beginning of the year, Patient Innovation celebrated its 8th anniversary. From February 7th to 11th, we organised a week full of content, surprises, and online activities to remember our most memorable moments over the last 8 years, including the several Patient Innovation Awards and Patient Innovation Bootcamp editions. We finished the anniversary week with a ‘Patient and Caregiver’s Innovations and Entrepreneurship’ Round Table, for which we invited some Patient Innovation awardees, a patient innovator, and a Patient Innovation Bootcamp alumni. | | | | | • 3rd edition of the Patient Innovation Bootcamp | The Patient Innovation Bootcamp just finished another amazing edition! This year, Patient Innovation held the 3rd edition of the PI Bootcamp with 10 participating teams with representatives from 8 European countries. Over the last 4 months, the 10 teams worked and further developed their solutions over three working weeks. The first week of the Bootcamp was hosted in Lisbon, at the Nova School of Business and Economics (Nova SBE) campus, where the teams got the opportunity to meet each other and network face-to-face with the incredible panel of mentors, speakers, and experts. This first week was focused on the developing and validation aspects and was organized by Patient Innovation in partnership with Nova SBE, Nova Medical School, and Glintt. The following week of hands-on work took place online “in Barcelona” with our partners IESE Business School and Biocat, that supported the teams in designing their business plan. The final week in-person happened in Copenhagen at Copenhagen Business School’s campus, organized by our partner Copenhagen Business School (activity leader) and BioInnovation Institute, with a great visit to their installations, where they focused on helping the teams consolidate, implement and diffuse their projects. | | | On the last day of the Patient Innovation Bootcamp, we held a pitch competition at Copenhagen Business School where the teams from across Europe, presented their ideas to a group of MSc students from the Innovation in Healthcare MSc program that acted as the jury. All 10 teams, Auricle, Careceiver, Diabmate, Tailored Talks, Light up cane, Reality Telling, Scally Care, Sensoseat, Smart Inhaler - Purcell Global, Uhura Bionics, presented their projects to the jury who selected the winning pitch. It was not an easy task as all the teams delivered great pitches, which showcased all the effort and hard work they put into developing their solutions throughout the Bootcamp. However, Uhura Bionics was the winner and received the award from Nikolaj Malchow-Møller, the President of CBS. | | • Extension of the Patient Innovation Bootcamp until 2025 | We are excited to announce that we have committed to extend the Patient Innovation Bootcamp program until, at least, 2025. EIT Health confirmed mid-July that they will sponsor the 2023, 2024 and 2025 editions of the Bootcamp. On behalf of all the partners (Copenhagen Business School, Patient Innovation, Nova Medical School, Nova SBE, IESE Business School, Biocat and Glintt) we are grateful for the support and look forward to working with patient innovators and entrepreneurs from around the world on accelerating their projects and ventures. | | | • Help Ukraine Project | Following the recent events in Ukraine, for the past couple of months Patient Innovation felt compelled to collect and share some do-it-yourself (DIY) solutions for emergency relief and support initiatives as well as solutions to help people settling into their new host countries. The aim of this project is to help those directly affected by the war by sharing solutions that can help better their day-to-day life. We invite everyone to share solutions with us that you know that can help in emergency situations (either DIY survival projects, solutions to help people in their new host country or even mental health related ones), via the “post a solution” button on our website (https://patient-innovation.com/). We will share them with everyone on our website after a simple screening process. #PatientInnovationStandsWithUkraine | | | | Earlier in the year, the Nova SBE Open & User Innovation Knowledge Center was created, a partnership between Nova SBE, Patient Innovation, Nova Medical School and Copenhagen Business School. The Nova SBE Open & User Innovation Knowledge Center brings together leading researchers and practitioners to produce and disseminate research-based knowledge in innovation management and, more specifically, open, user, and patient innovation and entrepreneurship. The Knowledge Center’s mission is to produce high-quality multidisciplinary research by fostering cooperation between management, scientists, and professionals of diverse backgrounds, hoping to become a leading center in its areas of expertise. Some of the first Knowledge Center activities include welcoming the "father" of user innovation, Professor Eric von Hippel, to Nova for 2 weeks, as well as the DRUID conference in 2023. | | | | One of our current projects is FCT’s Citizens4Health project. In this project we focus on healthcare and investigate the factors that influence the decision of patient/caregiver innovators to develop their own ventures and become entrepreneurs. Apart from product/market related dimensions, we will investigate some innovator-related factors, such as how the innovator opportunity costs influence the decision of patient/caregiver innovators to move forward with their ventures. To sum it up, the project Citizens4Heatlh has the ambition to build a resilient, bottom-up, crowd-based (i.e. from the people/users/households), and high-impact system of innovation that can help address emerging health related needs. | | The HealthEConnect project is our newest European project that has recently been approved. It is a project in partnership with Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Copenhagen Business School, the Startup Europe Regions Network and the BioInnovation Institute. The HealthEConnect aims to strengthen the cooperation between two innovation ecosystems: the HealthTech innovation ecosystem of the Lisbon region (PT) and the one of Hovedstaden (DK), to support the rise and growth of next-generation HealthTech companies through a co-designed, user-centered and entrepreneurial-driven Healthtech innovation and entrepreneurship educational offer launched in Lisbon capitalizing on best practices and platforms to sustain collaboration and resource flows between ecosystem members. | | • Internships: | This year, Patient Innovation had the pleasure of welcoming three batches of summer interns. Hugo Sousa is currently studying Bioengineering at Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto and spent 2 months with us as part of his internship with Associação Nacional de Estudantes de Engenharia Biomédica (ANEEB). | | In April, Miguel Anjos and André Dias joined our team as part of their Associação de Estudantes da Faculdade de Ciências Médicas’s (AEFCM) internship. During the internship, Miguel was in the 6th year of his medicine degree and André was in the 5th year of his medicine degree at Nova Medical School. | | During the summer, Mafalda Amado, from Colégio Marista de Carcavelos and Beatriz Botelho, from Escola Básica e Secundária Amélia Rey Colaço, joined our team as part of the 10th grade Ciência Viva internship. | | | • Features in the news - Planeta A TV documentary appearance
| Patient Innovation made an appearance on Planeta A (Planet A), a RTP 1 documentary series dedicated to the theme of sustainability. Patient Innovation was featured in the 8th episode of the series on “Social Innovation”, highlighting the patient and caregivers’ innovative potential and ‘Dar a Mão’ project. One of our co-founders, Pedro Oliveira was interviewed at Nova SBE’s and NOVA Medical School’s campus. | | | | | Patient Innovation along with some PI Bootcamp alumni teams, Glooma and Daiprox, were featured in an article in Revista Visão - Saúde titled “When patients become inventors”, about the work developed at the Gulbenkian Nova Chair / Cátedra and at the new Knowledge Center which resulted from it. | | | • Conferences and scientific meetings Over this past year, Patient Innovation participated in numerous conferences like the Smart Health Summit 2022, European Researcher's night, NOVA Sustainability Week, Tec2Med, FIC.A and III Cimeira das Regiões de Saúde, among others.
