Paul became paralysed from the neck down after a motorcycle accident. Scott is specialised in web design and marketing, and has been in a wheelchair since he was nine because of an incomplete spinal injury.

IAT consists of a ramp and four rollers that sit underneath the wheelchair, each of which has different resistance levels that can be modified individually. The rollers also come with built-in sensors and can be connected to any cycling app to measure speed, distance and calories.

Matt was born with blindness. He attended a school for the visually impaired as a child, but at age 16 he became the first blind student at Chetham's School of Music in Manchester. Then he went to study at the Royal Academy of Music.

Because he wasn’t able to find a system of Braille tablature, he developed in own - Talking Tab - with the help of scholar Tim Crawford and Rob Gravelle.

During his late teenage years and early twenties, Drew was a very accomplished athlete. He won several northern championships and competing at the British Olympic trials. He was given the opportunity to study human performance and physical education with a minor in business alongside competing in the National Collegiate Athletics Association.

In 2014, Drew broke his neck after a shallow dive accident, which led him to become quadriplegic. At the time, he was living in the USA so he had access to state-of-the-art rehabilitation.

Man invents mobile toilet for disabled people

Mobiloo consists of a portable toilet with an electric hoist, toilet and sink and was designed by James Brown. "Mobiloo is a complete service. When you book Mobiloo you also get a smiling, welcoming attendant/driver. James is a Paralympian who won a cycling bronze medal at London 2012. He has 5% vision in his right eye, and 3% in his left eye.

Hannah had her first maniac episode when she was 21. “I was writing an essay about dictionaries and went off on a hallucination where I thought I had special powers. I called my mother and told her I’d gone to space then come back down. The ambulance men came and I was hospitalised”, she recalled.

Then she realised she needed to collect her thoughts. She used her phone for this purpose and that led to the idea of creating an app especially for this. With the help of her husband, Tex Dunstan, she created Mental Snapp, which she describes as a “therapist in your pocket”.

They were inspired by their mother (and aunt) Nirmala, who lost her voice as a side effect of ALS. Nirmala had been a music teacher for 40 years, and in 2009, her voice began to fail.

Andrew trying a lot of different things to relieve the pain in his heel. Since nothing was working, he decided to take action.

So, in partnership with Clarkson University’s Shipley Center for Innovation, he came up with FootRest Pillow.

Andrew found a company to cut foam and then asked Facebook friends, who also struggle with foot pain, to test the prototype. “Based on their positive feedback, I saw an opportunity to bring relief to many people who suffer from foot and heel pain”, the inventor explained.

Student builds algorithm to help improve the results of radiotherapy for pancreatic cancer patients

Rishab Jain, born in 2005, in the USA, was a middle school student when he invented a tool to help doctors improve the results of radiotherapy for pancreatic cancer patients using artificial intelligence. He created this tool after a family friend died of pancreatic cancer.

Rishab was interested in science from an early age, having to program when he was seven years old. He got interested in treatments for pancreatic cancer after a family friend died of that condition.

Team creates app to help disabled patients to communicate

Josep William Widjaja and Ridwan Djuhari, from Indonesia, develop systems to help disabled users. They were inspired Kwa Geok Choo, the wife of Singapore first Prime Minister, Lee Kuan Yew, and how they kept communicating after Kwa’s had a severe stroke in 2008.

Eye Control app is an Android app that features an eye-tracking technology, providing a communication platform for patients experiencing speech disabilities.

It took the team six months to build the app. Joseph and Ridwanwon the Android Samsung Mobile Apps at SparxUp Awards, in 2011, with this project.

Ben worked as a volunteer at a local gym since he was 17 years old. That’s when he realised that it was hard for disabled people to get involved in physical activity. This led him to create a scheme to improve the accessibility of equipment and classes for disabled people.

Later on, the inventor became a qualified fitness instructor and present his idea to the NHS. With this, he was able to get funding.

Graham Naylor, a graphic designer, born in 1972, is an extreme-sports fan who lost the use of both of his legs in 2012, after being caught in an avalanche. Graham was buried so deep in snow that the oxygen didn’t reach his brain, leading to action myoclonus (an injury to the part of the brain that controls motor functions, swallowing, speech and limb movement).

Blind man develops social website for disabled people

MDM is a free and accessible social website designed by and for disabled people.

Dale has been blind for over 30 years. He believes that social media is should be a virtual space for people to connect, but sites like Facebook and Instagram are not quite prepared to be used by disabled people, which lead them to feel isolated and neglected.

"Facebook, in particular, I find very difficult to use as a blind person," he explained.

Teacher creates special fitness centre for her disabled students

Peggy Mills, from the USA, is an adapted physical education teacher who developed a UFIT, a gym with programs to help people with neurological, developmental or physical challenges stay fit. She created this solution because she had students with disabilities graduated from school and entered adulthood who had a hard time to find a place to work out and stay fit.
