Father creates device to aid his daughter’s hearing

About the solution

Shameera started wearing behind the ear hearing aids soon after, but she was always destroying or losing them, so they weren’t on for very long.

“The minute we turned our back, Shameera would rip the hearing aids off her ears. We spent hours looking for them. We turned to the audiologists at our local hearing clinic, for a solution. They were aware of a few products and we tried a couple of them. But for one reason or another, they really just didn't do the job”, Mark said.

As a caregiver, her father realized he had to come up with a solution to fix this problem.

“I knew there had to be some way to keep Shameera's hearing aids secure and safe. After giving the problem a fair bit of thought, I came up with the idea of a colorful pair of spandex sleeves that would cover may daughter's hearing aids and essentially lock them in. These sleeves would then be attached to a cord and a clip. Now, if Shameera took her hearing aids off they would hang safely, with the added bonus that it was very difficult for her to remove the hearing aids from the sleeves”.

The Ear Gear is a colorful spandex sleeves that looks cool and fit snugly over his daughter’s hearing aids, effectively keeping them safe and secure. Rosal’s invention ensured that his daughter’s hearing aids were more comfortable to wear, stayed dry, and stayed put—and earned a stamp of approval from her audiologist.

In 2005, Rosal established Ear Gear as a family-owned business to distribute a variety of “gear for ears” modeled on the ones he had created for his daughter. All Ear Gear products were designed to make hearing aids more wearable and secure. Rosal’s business took off, making a difference for hearing professionals and hearing aid users alike, who reported greater comfort and fewer instances of damage or loss.
