About the solution
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the World Health Organization and each country’s National Health Authorities were advising citizens to maintain social distance and follow proper health and safety measures. In order to make this process easier, Prabin Kumar Das developed Kawach - a device that combines many features designed to help people navigate life during the pandemic and reduce the spread of the virus.
As he explained: “I noticed that people were finding it so difficult to maintain safe distance despite knowing how important it is. I thought the reminders we are giving each other are not enough and we need a constant reminder, hence I worked on the pendant”
Kawach is a device that is meant to be worn as a pendant, around the neck, that vibrates and glows every time someone gets within a 1 meter distance from the users. It is also equipped with a beeper that emits and alert every 30 minutes, to remind the users to wash their hands. Another feature is the incorporated temperature sensor that sends an SMS to the users when their body temperature goes over the determined threshold.
“Kawach is a low cost and easy to carry device that comprises of an LED, vibrator, controller, battery, human body temperature sensor, ultrasonic sensor, switch and a storage card,” explained the student.
In the development of this device Prabin worked under the supervision and mentorship of several of his proffesors, including Dr. Lovi Raj Gupta, Executive Dean of Science and Technology at Lovely Professional College. Talking about Kawach, Dr. Gupta stated: “We have built a product prototype and now we are looking for someone who has facility of bulk production with basic technology transfer”. Dr. Gupta also said that they do not intend to make a profit on the product and their main goal is “to take this low-cost-high-impact device to people”.
