Girl invents bra for women recovering from post-mastectomy inspired by her mother

Shared by Ana Duarte on 2019-08-30 16:18

About the solution

Because of her mother’s condition, Leah went to learn more about mastectomies. She also got the following feedback from her mother’s doctor: “the bras I get at my hospital, I have to take a pair of scissors and cut them. Because they’re cutting into the patients, and causing wounds. Sometimes we’ll use safety pins to actually pin the drain bulb on the bra”.

This made the student to want to come up with a solution that would solve all of these issues. That’s how the Resilience Bra was born.

“The Resilience Bra is post-operative mastectomy and breast reconstruction bra for patients to wear after their surgery. The Resilience Bra includes features such as built-in compartments, detachable shoulder straps, adjustable bands, and drain pocket holders. Unlike mastectomy bras on the market today, the Resilience Bra includes unique features making the recovery process for patients more comfortable and manageable while reducing the risk of complications due to surgery”, it says on the official website.

Leah wants to get her device patented and launched a crowdfunding campaign to go towards product manufacturing and continued research and development.

She is studying entrepreneurship while working on fabrics with a mentor, working on her third proto-type, and meeting with investors to make this all a reality.
Her goal is to make the bra available for everyone dealing with mastectomies, in order to help reduce the number of post-surgical complications that women can experience after breast-related surgeries.
