ONEder - an app that helps children with autism

About the solution

When Jonathan Izak graduated from university, his little brother Oriel was 10 years old and suffered from autism.

Izak thought that the options in the market were not good enough. “They’re big, bulky, and expensive,” he said. “Some of them can be between $9,000 and $12,000, and provide only limited functionality.”

So, in order to help his brother communicate and learn new tasks, he developed an app called ONEder. Unlike other apps, ONEder, which first had been called Autismate, makes the navigation process easier. For example, children with autism have difficulty allocating things to categories. So, ONEder allows teachers and caretakers to define their chosen spaces like ‘My Room’, or ‘Kitchen’, with actions on top of the image. Tapping on an icon in the kitchen, for example, brings up images of different types of food. It also includes videos showing, for example, how to brush one’s teeth.

The app is also connected to GPS, so that the proper spaces can appear at the appropriate time, such as ‘My School’ when the user is near it.

ONEder helps the users communicate and also get more comfortable with every day tasks, which in turn increases their responsiveness to others, even if it’s just eye contact.

The app is available at the App Store and has been used in several schools in New York.
