About the solution

Initially built for my quadriplegic brother, this is a revolutionary design that hides a wheelchair size elevator underneath an existing set of stairs and pivots the stairs out of the way when the elevator is needed. Significant advantages over any other home elevator solution for mobility-limited individuals:
- A more affordable option to a care facility (senior center, home living center)
- Much easier to install – no shaft construction required
- Greater space conservation – hides under stairs
- Considerably shorter and less expensive installation time
- Perfect solution for those preferring to age-in-place

About the author

My older brother Fritz had broken his neck in a diving accident and I wanted to figure out a way to easily get him up and down the stairs in our home. Since my wife (wisely) would not let me cut a hole for an elevator in the living room floor, I realized that the basement stairwell seemed like it could work instead. So I pulled together parts from a salvage yard and EBay and built the first "Stairwell Elevator" to help my brother. Now we are close to being able to affordably offer the same space-saving elevator to everyone who needs it!
