Mother develops app to help daughter who suffers from Down Syndrome

About the solution

When Sofia was born, Marinalva realised her daughter would need special resources like speech therapy, so help her develop her speech. She wanted to have those resources in her home, so she sought help from Alessandra Alaniz Macedo, a professor at Faculdade de Filosofia, Ciências e Letras de Ribeirão Preto, Brazil.

As soon as the two of them realised the current technologies didn’t meet Sofia’s needs, they decided to create their own solution. That’s when, in 2016, SofiaFala was born.

SofiaFala consists of a free Android app which brings together parents, therapists and patients by using machine learning and artificial intelligence.

The app works by capturing sounds and images produced during speech therapy and then analysing them. The app then gives the parent two types of information about the child’s performance: playful-educational information and statistic data for the therapist to evaluate the patient’s clinical evolution.

Marinalva Dias Sores, from Brazil, is a computer scientist who built SofiaFala, a mobile to help Down Syndrome children. She was inspired by her own daughter, Sofia, who has Down Syndrome.
