Woman who broke her collarbone creates device to help her recover

About the solution

“I left outpatients in terrible pain with an inadequate collar and cuff sling, as most people do. I was desperate to ease the excruciating pain and somehow avoid inevitable surgery and I cobbled together a crude prototype. It eased the pain and I healed really well and much faster than expected”, she explained.

The ClaviBrace® design, which was created to relieve pain and help with healing, has been evaluated by shoulder surgeons Professor Angus Wallace and Ian Bayley. ClaviBrace is a Class 1 Medical Device registered with the healthcare regulatory agency and complies with all UK and EU regulations.

According to the official website, it works the following ways:
“- It is the only brace specifically designed to hold a broken collarbone in place without bearing down on the fracture
- Does not ride up and maintains constant shoulder support
- Does not cut in at the underarms or interfere with blood supply to the arms
- Prevents rotation of the fracture and subsequent malunion (badly joining of the two broken ends)
- Stops excruciating nerve pain - lifts the broken bone ends up and away from underlying nerves preventing nerve impingement and risk of nerve damage
- Quickly stabilises the fracture, holding it in the best possible position for healing
- Crucially, prevents shortening of the collarbone
- Reduces disturbance providing an ideal healing environment for faster calcification (bone hardening)”.

ClaviBrace® is available in two models: for adults and for children, costing from £240.00.

It won the Da Vinci award for medical breakthrough 2010.
