Researchers from the Federal University of São Carlos (Universidade Federal de São Carlos – USFCar), have created a system to improve the intubation procedure of patients with Covid-19.

9-year-old builds foot operated hand washing system to prevent coronavirus infections

Stephen Wamukote is 9-year-old boy from Kenya. During the Covid-19 pandemic, he saw on TV a piece about ways to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus, and decided to take initiative and build a tool that would help is village stay safe. So, he took some of his father’s wood and constructed a simple frame that allows people to wash their hands without touching any surfaces.

Inventor creates emergency ventilator to tackle the Covid-19 pandemic

In Kashmir, a region that’s located between India and Pakistan, reports stated that there were little more than 100 ventilators available to provide for a population of 12,5 million people. Knowing about his situation, 22-year-old inventor Waseem Ahmad Nadaf realized that the region was not equipped to deal with the Covid-19 pandemic. So, he decided to put his innovation capacities to work and started working on a low-cost emergency ventilator.

Architect designs cardboard beds to tackle the shortage of beds for patients with Covid-19

Rhea Shah, an architect living in Mumbai, realized that the country was experiencing a shortage of hospitals beds, in hospitals and quarantine centers, for patients with Covid-19. While quarantining in her family home, who run the Aryan Paper Mill, she had the idea of creating low-cost, disposable, cardboard beds. Together with her brother Mihir Shah, manager of the factory, they spent a week developing the prototype.

Teenager creates innovation to make golf safer during the Covid-19 pandemic

Ethan Wittman, a 15-year-old highschool student, is also a member of the Norsk Golf Club. To help his club get back to normal operation during the Covid-19 pandemic, while keeping the players safe, he created two hole cover models.

The problem he identified was the fact that every player had to put their hand inside the holes in order to retrieve the ball – a practice that could lead to a potential spread of infection. The cover Ethan created prevent the balls from completely entering the hole, so each player can retrieve their own ball without touching anything else.

Nurse takes family photos to hospitalized patients with Covid-19

Jeanna Barbieri is an emergency room nurse, who was taking care of patients with Covid-19 at the Lowell General Hospital. Working in the frontlines of the pandemic, she was working closely with infected patients and found out that the father of an old high school friends was hospitalized at the unit where she worked. She offered to take some photos of family and friend to comfort the patients, as she explains: "They ended up printing out some photos and putting them in their mailbox and I grabbed them from their mailbox on the way into work the next day.

Crowdsourcing initiative to find a drug against Covid-19

Scientist and expert from all over the world have come together in the Covid Moonshot project, to develop a compound to fight the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

In January 2020, scientist from China determined the structure of an enzime in the virus, essential for the virus to be able to replicate, that would make for an excellent drug target. On the following months, in the UK, scientist at Diamond Light Source started researching chemical fragments that would bind to the virus enzyme, potentially inactivating it.

Mother creates superhero face shields to keep children protected

Maysa Talerd, a single mother from Thailand, has created a way to make face shields appealing for children. During the Covid-19 pandemic, health authorities all over the world were encouraging their citizens to wear face masks and/or protective shields – specially in the case of small children, for whom face shields are easier to wear than face masks. However, even face shields could be hard for children to wear for long periods of time.

Ugandan innovator creates shields for motorcycle taxis

In Uganda, motorcycles are a big part of the public transportation system, providing taxi service to their passengers. There are hundreds of thousands of these motorcycles, called boda-bodas, on the streets of Uganda.

However, due to the close proximity between the passengers and the drivers, the Ugandan government banned boda-bodas form taking passengers during the Covid-19. The drivers were only allowed to deliver goods, which caused a big decrease in business and many drivers found themselves struggling to make a living during this time.

Friends develop Classroom Spacing Calculator to keep students safe in school

To help maintain social distancing measures and keep students safe at school, Rita Rain and Bogna Haponiuk have developed a Classroom Spacing Calculator. According to guidelines emitted by the CDC, students should be kept 6 feet (1,80 meters) apart. Using this tool, schools “can easily check how many students will fit into one classroom”.

Young man launches radio station to help his village cope with the Covid-19 pandemic

Saidingliana Sailo is 27 year old who lives in the small village of Behliangchhip, India. When a man from his village tested positive for Covid-19, in the beginning of July 2020, the village became very agitated with the news. “When the news of him testing positive arrived, everyone in our village was suddenly alarmed anxious. The SDM reached our village, issued a set of restrictions and said we now came under red zone. Local task forces were formed and severe restrictions were imposed on public movement. We were all worried about community transmission.”, he explained.

Nursing homes launch a request for pen pals to keep their residents connected during the Covid-19 pandemic

For elderly people living in nursing homes and assisted care facilities, the Covid-19 pandemic had a very negative side-effect. Visits were not allowed during this period, to prevent the spread of the pandemic, so these senior were feeling very lonely and isolated without the presence of their loved-ones.

Students develop remote controlled robot to assist patients with Covid-19

Engeneering students from the Ecole Superiore Polytechnique (ESP), in Dakar, have developed a medical robot designed to help medical professionals stay safe while treating patients with Covid-19. We've found that health care workers are highly exposed to Covid-19 because they don't have enough protective equipment," explaines Lamine Mouhamed Kébé, one of the coordinator of the project.

Michelle Vaughan is a nurse who was working in the Intensive Care Unit at the Bon Secours St. Mary’s Hospital during the Covid-19 pandemic. She described the experience as “incredibly scary. We’re incredibly emotionally impacted by this”. Everyday she was taking care of patients who were hospitalized and feeling isolated because they were unable to receive visits from their loved-ones. “All of us have this craving. It's human nature to want to be connected to your family, to those people who love you the most", she explained in an interview.

Robot to help hospitalized patients keep in touch with their loved ones

Patients who were hospitalized during the Covid-19 pandemic were not allowed to receive visits from their loved-ones, in order to prevent the spread of the virus. However, to make sure the patients could still keep in touch with their family and friends, a group of experts from Italy got together in a coalition called Low-Hanging Fruits, to develop LHC-Connect.

This invention was created amidst the Covid-19 pandemic, following the World Health Organization’s recommendation that people should avoid touching their faces to help prevent infections by the new coronavirus.

Teacher and student create podcast for people to share their coronavirus stories

Aimee Coelho teaches Media Studies at Millfield School. During class, before the school closed during the country’s lockdown, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Aimee challenged student Charlie Kilner to take part in a new project. Together, they created “Listening Archive”, a podcast that gathers stories of how people all over the world are dealing with the coronavirus outbreak.
