The first CaringBridge site launched on June 7, 1997, when two college friends asked software engineer Sona Mehring to keep everyone updated after the premature birth of their daughter, Brighid. After a few agonizing phone calls, Sona said, “There’s got to be a better way,” so she created a website. The website Sona creates receives 1,000 hits in one week. Sadly, after a 9-day struggle, against tremendous odds, Brighid dies in surgery.
