About the solution
Ollie, was born with Down Syndrome.
When Reece, his dad, was young, he adored spending time looking at comic books, with larger-than-life superheroes. Unfortunately, there weren't a lot of stories out there that featured a hero with Down syndrome for his son to look up to, and that bothered him tremendously. "I wanted Ollie to see that people with Down syndrome could be superheroes too," he says, and this is how he decided to write a comic book of his own!
The comic book is called Metaphase, which follows a young boy named Ollie whose dad has Superman-like powers, and who wants to follow in his father's footsteps and get in, on the whole saving the world thing. At the same time, Super Dad, for all his cosmic strength, is too afraid of what might happen to his son while fighting villains. Ollie has lived all his life listening to the world tell him he will be limited in what he can and cannot do, with the added frustration of being compared to his dad's unlimited ability.
Eventually, Ollie seeks out a mysterious corporation that promises to give anyone superpowers via a little genetic tampering, and while unfazed by his disability, and the limits placed on him by everyone around him, Ollie refuses to let anything stop him from becoming the world's next great hero.
Reece originally presented the 10-page comic for close friends and family but was soon contacted by Alterna Comics for a more fleshed-out tale. Metaphase was published in the summer of 2015 after a Kickstarter campaign raised thousands of dollars to help it get off the ground.
