About the solution
Birkley Logan is a 13 years old living in Colorado, that was diagnosed at birth with deafness and cerebral palsy due to a viral infection during her mother's pregnancy. With these disabilities Birkley has several difficulties walking and moving around, being one of them playing around with her friends at the playground in an up right position. In order to bypass this struggle, Birkley started to shuffle around on her knees, which resulted in scrapes and bruises when playing on hard and splintery wood on the deck, or on the rough asphalt in the cul de sac near her house.
With this in mind, Birkley's mum, Tamra Logan, searched for a solution that would mitigate this problem, but with little to no success, she started to develop her own. At first she tried Nike arm sleeves which didn’t stay on, and sweatbands that were too short, as it didn't cover all of the knee, volleyball knee pads didn’t come in sizes that fit four-to-six-year olds and would get wrecked right away as they weren’t abrasion-proof. The right material set came about with her husband’s biking arm sleeve warmers, silicon, and shoo goo, that later evolved into the SKNEEKS final product, made out of a spandex sleeve with a hole on the back of the knee to let out some of the sweat and a leather with a semi-rubber finish, similar to a black shoe sole material in the knee cap region, in order to become abrasion resistant.
This invention allowed Birkley and many more people around the world to experience a sense of freedom like no other, as they were not limited to indoor places to run around in their most comfortable way possible, on their keens. No more bruising and scrapping, just fun and excitement!
