Grandfather develops system to help prevent children from being forgotten in cars

About the solution

“He went to work, forgot the child, the child perished. So I became very concerned about that”, he explained. That led Russel “to find a system that would prevent that from happening.”

Being a grandfather and a retired engineer, Russel came up with the Child Safety Seat Alarm System. The product line also includes anti‐drowning and anti‐wandering alarms and one that signals low blood sugar. The safety seat alarm links a small pressure‐sensitive pad to a transmitter, which fastens to the side of the car seat.

The system works with a receiver attached to a keychain sounds an alarm — for hours, if need be — if the driver moves beyond a pre‐set distance of 6 to 10 feet without disarming the device by taking the child out of the car seat.

The gadget is being commercialised via the innovator’s company, Suddenly Safe ’N Secure Systems and can be bought for $79 (for a model that arms itself automatically when the child sits on the pad and version that can be turned on manually costs $59).

About the author

Russell Rusakov, from the USA, created, in 2010, a device that warns when kids get too close to a swimming pool and a blood‐sugar alarm. He was inspired to invent this gadget because he is a grandfather and a child died, close to his home, after being forgotten in the car.
