About the solution
Simin Nasseri had several family members and friends who suffered from arthritis and other diseases, which caused finger deformities.
That is when Nasseri noticed that the supports available were not strong, comfortable or resizable enough. She then created a new support made of soft polymer with inserted sheets of aluminium, steel or carbon-fiber. This invention is softer and more durable than the other existent options.
“The support is so thin and soft that it can be used at functional positions, meaning that you are able to slip it over your finger and perform normal, everyday tasks with your hands without difficulty,” Nasseri said.
Nasseri, who is a professor of mechanical engineering, recruited students to help her with her invention. She worked with a team of seven engineering students, who helped design the product, as well as during the simulations and mechanical testing.
The finger support was created using a LaserJet 3D printer and after mechanical testing, Nasseri believes that the finger support is reliable and can be brought to the market.
