Asthma patient develops portable device to measure breathing

Ana Duarte 于 2017-09-18 11:29 分享

About the solution

Whenever Hannah had an asthma attack, she often had to go on a trip to the emergency room for a spirometry test. But she wondered if all of that was really necessary. Hannah started thinking about how to build a small portable measuring device that she could use at home, something that could also help other asthma patients avoid regular trips to the hospital.

Using 3D printing, the teen created a low-cost, accurate, portable spirometry device that allows an easier interface between patient and physician, using a mobile app.

“Spiroedge's goal is to provide real-time data to users, so that they can track their lung inflammation levels, spirometric values, as well as oximetry data. The mobile interface allows for an on-the-go, easy to use platform for maintaining healthy lung function for patients and athletes alike.

Spiroedge utilizes a number of technologies to provide accurate, quick results. Air pressure sensors precisely measure lung capacity, while allowing for real-time recording via an Android application. An oximeter is also incorporated into the spirometer's function - a unique integration of two medical tools, right at your fingertips. FeNO measurements are also provided in less than 15 seconds”, says on the official website.

Hannah also founded her own company – SpiroEdge.
