About the solution
“In some places, like the library in my town, the ramps are far away from handicap parking and the entrance to the building. It would be so much easier if my walker was more like an all-terrain vehicle and could go over curbs or stairs”, the girl expressed.
So Sadie took action. She had the idea for this solution when she was seven years old, while recovering from surgery at the hospital.
“My sister Claire and I decided to work as partners. I did basic sketches on paper, and my family helped me iron out the creases like planning, drilling and sawing.
Claire and I had a few different ideas that we tested. We tried a four-wheeled design, different wheel sizes and types and different base sizes before we decided on our final product”, the inventor explained.
To build this product they used two old walkers (one for demonstrating and one for the wheelbase), plastic for the wheelbase, wheels from a lawn mower and a skateboard’s curb.
Sadie’s father helped by drilling, and sawing for the wheel assembly.
The young inventor already won some awards by creating this device: first place for “Best Use of a Wheel” at her school Invention Convention and second place for “Kids’ Choice”, and won first place for “Special Needs Award” and another first place for “Microsoft Technology Award”.
