About the solution
After 13 years in the military as a combat engineer, Joe was left with both physical and emotional pain. ‘Call it post-traumatic stress, guilt, I don't know. Whatever you want to call it, I started going through it’, he said.
His main physical symptom was headaches, for which he could not find a solution.
That is when one day, while driving, he accidentally rubbed the tips of his sunglasses over his temples and felt relieved.
The next day he tried to look for an actual temple massager he could buy, but there was none in the market. So, he decided to invent one.
The Meisch Temple Massager is a Y-shaped device, which can be held by the user’s hand, so they can give themselves a temple massage with almost no effort.
First, the user should find a comfortable place with no distractions. There are two sets of massage tips so each person can choose their preferred one. To adjust the pressure, the user should twist the black turnbuckle in the middle of the massager arms. It is also possible to add an aromatherapy essential oil to the pad in the middle of the massager.
To massage the user should push the massage tips over the forehead to the temple and lower jaw areas. Then they should move the massager in different directions or in a slow circular motion.
Joe says his invention not only helped with the headaches, but also reduced stress and improved sleep.
He thought his invention could help other soldiers who faced similar issues. Despite several offers for commercialization, Joe had different plans. He covered himself the production costs and, for 11 years, he sent 2800 units to veterans’ hospitals, soldiers in Afghanistan and first responders to California’s wildfires.
He has received very positive feedback about the benefits of the Temple Massager in reducing stress and improving sleep and now he has made it available for everyone.
Polytrauma Systems of Care VA Palo Alto, Ca and Stanford California University School of Medicine are currently conducting pre-clinical studies on the efficacy of the Temple Massager in mild and moderate Traumatic Brain Injury patients who suffer from headaches.
Nowadays, Joe recommends it to help with temporomandibular disorders, intrusive thoughts, headaches and calming.
In 2008 Joe got a patent for his device. He also created his own company Temple Massager Inc. and the massager can also be bought on the official website with free shipping in the U.S. He will continue to support the military through reduced costs and donations.
