Former triathlete invents a specialized walking device

Shared by Katie Patient on 2017-07-18 10:50

About the solution

About 20 years ago, Kim began experiencing symptoms such as fatigue, dizziness, bone deterioration and loss of muscle. As a world-ranked endurance athlete and triathlete, she decided to take her health into her own hands. On top of prescribing her own whole food diet, Kim managed to research enough to successfully diagnose herself with a rare genetic disorder which produces defective cellular proteins. More recently, deciding she would not let her condition prevent her from being an athlete, she invented the ROVA, a mobile device that aids walking.

Kim and her husband Charles worked together to use their knowledge of the technology of cycling to create the device. It differs from traditional walkers by utilizing a central cross bar instead of split hand rails. This significantly decreases the chance of wrist stress and wreak havoc on posture as a result of using the walker. Additionally, the ROVA has a cell phone holder, shopping basket and, according to Kim, doesn’t carry the traditional “walker” stigma.

The idea stemmed from Kim’s daily experiences, saying “When I was disabled, I couldn’t wait to get behind a shopping cart.”

The ROVA, which is an evocative of the word “rove”, now resembles a transportable, lightweight and maneuverable stylish shopping cart.

Using the ROVA prototype, Kim recently defied the odds by competing in the Carlsbad Half Marathon. Apart from proving her own ability, Kim hopes that the visibility of the ROVA through competing will gain publicity needed to start a marketing campaign.

About the author

Kim Goodsell, from California, USA, competed in triathlons and endurance races until she was in her 30s. Despite being diagnosed with Charcot–Marie–Tooth disease and a rare genetic heart condition her adventurous spirit continued to push her to travel and engage in activity. It was this spirit that drove her to invent the ROVA, a mobile walking device, so that she could continue to participate in races.
