Mom Clare Tawell Makes Inclusive Dolls- Bright Ears UK- to Help Children With Disabilities Feel Accepted

Joana Afonso PI 于 2024-06-20 11:07 分享

About the solution

Clare Tawell, a former hospital radiographer, started a not-for-profit company called Bright Ears UK to help children feel more included and represented. Her motivation came from her own experience with her daughter, Matilda, who was born deaf and needed a hearing aid. When Clare tried to find a doll with a hearing aid for Matilda, she couldn't find any.

Realizing this gap, Clare decided to make a doll herself. Her friends, who were also part of the National Deaf Children's Society, asked her to make dolls for their children too. This small project quickly grew through word of mouth, leading Clare to formally set up Bright Ears UK in 2017.

Clare’s company has grown, and she now makes dolls with other features such as feeding tubes, cleft palates, and stoma bags. Her dolls have even reached children in America and Australia. Clare hopes that major toy companies will notice her idea and start making similar toys widely available. Pricing starts at 9£.
